The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia 1-0 to win third place at the ongoing 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
It felt more like the Eagles were claiming their birthright as they did justice to the game once more to add yet another bronze medal to Nigeria’s vast AFCON collection.
A 3rd minute close range goal from Odion Ighalo after a brief goalmouth squabble, was all the Nigerian team needed to seal the win on Wednesday night, at the Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo.
It was quite a lacklustre game as the Tunisians did not put up that much of a fight against the daring Eagles, who had easily defeated stronger teams in the preliminary stages of the tournament.
In their favourite green and white, the Eagles maintained solid dominance of the game, giving little room to Tunisia, who were more concerned about not conceding more goals, than actually scoring.
Ighalo is now in line to win the AFCON top scorer golden boot, unless Senegal forward Sadio Mane scores a hat-trick in the AFCON final against Algeria.
Nigerian fans have generally criticised Gernot Rohr’s choice of leaving Francis Uzoho on the bench for Daniel Akpeyi, after the former’s good performance for Nigeria against Tunisia.
