2013 World Youth Championship: Eaglets Get Off To A Flyer

The Golden Eaglets (Nigeria’s U-17 football team) started their World Cup campaign in scintillating fashion on Saturday, trashing their Mexican counterparts 6-1. Kelechi Iheanacho grabbed the headlines with four goals as the Eagles ran riot against the Mexicans. This sees him climb to the top of the goal scorer’s chat. He scored two goals in quick session, scoring in the 33rd minute and 40th minute against the run of play to give Nigeria a 2-0 lead. Mexico pulled one back through Jaimes who took advantage of some horrid defending to reduce the deficit. Nigeria rallied back and got another goal through Iheanacho. Chidiebere Nwakali and Isaac got a goal each to make the score 5-1 before Iheanacho rounded off the goals for the night by netting a fourth. The win sees Eaglets climb to the summit of Group F of the 2013 edition of the World Youth Championship in the United Arab Emirates. Sweden, Eaglets next opponent in their next group game on Tuesday, outplayed Iraq in the other Group F game to be level on points with Eaglets. The Nigerian Eaglets have been victors of this competition on three occasions; in 1985, 1993 and 2007.
