12th Aag: Team Nigeria Finish Second On Medals Table

The 12th edition of the All African Games ended on Saturday, August 31, 2019 with Team Nigeria finishing second on the medals table behind Egypt.

A total of 121 medals comprising of 44 gold, 30 silver, and 47 bronze were bagged by Nigerian representatives at the continental sporting event. The Egyptian athletic team topped the medals table with a total of 264 medals made up of 99 gold, 96 silver, and 69 bronze. The North African nation has maintained the top spot in the medals table in almost all editions of the African Games except at the Abuja 2003 edition when Team Nigeria finished top, and in 1978 when the Egyptian team had to withdraw midway into the Games due to perceived hostility with fellow North Africans, Algeria. Third on the medals table is South Africa with 87 medals comprising of 36 gold, 26 silver, and 25 bronze medals.

The majority of medals won by Nigeria came from weightlifting, with the game accounting for 16 gold, 13 silver, and 18 bronze medals. In athletics, Nigeria finished with 10 gold, seven silver, and six bronze medals. Two gold, three silver, and four bronze medals were also won by Nigeria in Table Tennis. For Badminton, a total of two gold, three silver and three bronze medals were recorded for Nigeria. Basketball fetched Team Nigeria a gold and bronze. In the women’s football category, the Falconets grabbed gold after beating Cameroon on penalties in the final match, while the men’s team, the Flying Eagles won silver.

Nigerian boxers did not leave the competition empty after winning a gold, silver, and five bronze medals. One gold was won in Karate for Nigeria, while gymnastic recorded a gold medal and two bronze medals. Taekwando also fetched one gold medal for Nigeria, with medals equally coming from some games such as rowing, canoeing and sailing, with the duo of Ayomide Bello and Foloki Goodness capturing gold on the morning of Friday, August 30, 2019 at Mohammed Ben Abdellah Dam.
