Selected applicants will receive the grant, and also attend a Digital Identity Training Workshop in Abuja between Monday 9th and Thursday 12th of August 2021. The journalists will investigate issues around digital identification, and technology in Nigeria.
Issues Journalists Will Investigate
Journalists selected for this program will be expected to investigate issues around these themes:- Regional, National, and Community IDs Issued by the Government: The plans and promises of government concerning IDs, the rationale for ID programs, public reaction to them, and lessons that may be learned from these.
- Data Practices of Private Sector Concerns: Private sector approaches to identity, data sharing, and cyber-security; Know Your Customer (KYC), compliance, data breaches, penalties, and incentives for various data practices.
- Regulations and Accountability: Privacy protection laws, surveillance laws, standards and codes of conduct, oversight at regional levels, litigation and grievance processes, and public engagement.

- Technology-Driven Innovation: The promise of blockchain, biometrics, algorithms, open-source code, ‘reg-tech,’ and futuristic technologies should be covered, as well as the role of startups in the development of these utilities.
- Foreign Partnerships: Data collection by private companies, data localization, technology transfers, AI-based identification systems provided by Chinese companies, and government ID databases.
- Others include the development of security agendas, trends and research in identity management technologies, and privacy and user control issues.
How To Apply For The Grant and Workshop
Applications are expected to be sent in on or before July 9, 2021. They should include the following items:- The applicant’s CV
- A brief proposal presenting the story the applicant will investigate, as well as its significance and relevance; the investigation methodology; the platform on which it will be published; a budget including items to be expended for, totalling no more than $1,000.
- A list of previous reporting by the applicant that’s relevant to their proposal.
