Hitting the snooze button

There’s every chance that you hit the snooze button to catch more sleep anytime you wake up feeling sleepy. While this seems like an effective way to get enough rest before you start off the day, it can be detrimental to your health.  When you go back to sleep for a short while after you’ve woken up, your body enters a sleep cycle which it is unable to complete such a short time interval. This is why sleep experts recommend that you always have a stipulated time of the amount of sleep you need and set an alarm accordingly.  The average adult needs about 7.5 hours of sleep.

Scrolling through your phone first thing in the morning

As much as it can be tempting, scrolling through your phone first thing in the morning is not an ideal way to start your day. The sensational content you find on social media can be so distracting and time-consuming.  When you indulge in it first thing in the morning, you may find yourself wasting a significant part of the day before you can even start it.  Also, social media is really not the best place to be when you consider its effect on mental health. It’s always best to start your day with productive activities like reading, exercising or meditating. These will benefit your mind and also help you take on the rest of the day effectively.

Skipping breakfast

According to the popular saying: “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper.” Indeed, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Several studies show how morning meals help you lose weight, improve memory, cut down the risk of heart disease and boosts energy. No matter how busy you are, it is important to plan ahead and make sure that you always have something to eat first thing in the morning.

Not drinking water

The morning is one of the best times to hydrate. This is because your body goes without water for the hours you asleep and needs hydration to function properly. Drinking water in the morning helps to detox your liver, reduce constipation, boosts your immune system, helps with bad breath and fuels your brain.

Forgetting to open the curtains

When you wake up in the morning, one of the first things you should do is open the curtain. This helps to signal to your brain that night time is over and it’s a new day.  Open the curtains first thing to let the sun in or you can turn on the lights. This is a great way to stop feeling sluggish and sleepy when you wake up.
