The Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) is an organization that exists to enhance citizens’ knowledge of Nigeria’s laws and legislative processes, and improve their engagement with elected representatives at the National Assembly.

PLAC was founded in 2009. Years later, it established an online presence with its website, a channel through which it now connects with the public. It leverages this platform to share important legal content, including laws, legal summaries, and updates from the federal legislative chambers. This is important work, especially in a country whose people are generally not in tune with its law-making bodies. The widespread apathy around what the National Assembly does has probably contributed to the underperformance of both legislative chambers over the years. Through its advocacy programs, PLAC is hoping to awaken national consciousness about how Nigeria’s laws impact the everyday lives of its people, and why they should participate in the legislative and policy-making processes. PLAC says its vision is “to create an improved democratic environment for Nigeria;” its mission is “to promote citizens participation in public policies and engagement with public institutions, and also promote elections credibility in Nigeria.” Both these are stated on its website.

To this end, the organization has utilized multiple means to reach its target audience—NGOs and the general public –with the resources and technical assistance they need to properly engage with policymakers. These resources can be found on the PLAC website. They include publications containing analysis and summaries of existing laws, Federal acts (downloadable), reports from committees of the Senate and House of Representatives, and legislative agendas for both chambers of the National Assembly. For persons seeking quick visual explanations of government policies and their impact on various aspects of national life, PLAC has easy-to-read infographics that cover these things. They also have lists of House, Senate, and legislative committee members, and a bills tracker that shows the number of bills introduced to the House of Representatives and the Senate. But PLAC is involved with more than just legal and policy matters. It also works to strengthen election credibility by engaging with electoral bodies and sets up situation rooms to monitor general elections in the country. Eventually, the team at PLAC hopes to get regular citizens more involved in legal reforms and policymaking. They believe this to be a sure path to sustainable development for Nigeria.
