Nigerians seeking to renew their US visas no longer need to make a physical appearance at the US Embassy in Abuja or Consulate in Lagos.
The consulate of the United States in Nigeria has announced the commencement of “no interview’’ visa renewal otherwise known as ‘Dropbox’ for Nigerians. This information was made public by the US Mission Country Consular Coordinator, Susan Tuller, during a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at the US Embassy in Lagos State. The process which commences this February is aimed at ensuring that the non-immigrant visa renewal process is easy for Nigerians.

 “The U.S. Mission will expand visa services to assist non-immigrant visa applicants in Nigeria who qualify to renew their visa,’’
the US Consulate official said. Furthermore, the consulate office disclosed that the Dropbox application process would only be temporarily available for a limited number of applicants seeking academic, work, study, and tourist visa renewals. The processing time for the Dropbox visa renewal is two month.
 “The number of qualified applicants who can apply using the new procedures will be limited initially,”
the statement read. With this development, the Dropbox visa renewal process according to the US Mission is expected to commence only at the US High Commission office in Lagos this February, before the process will be made available at the US Embassy in Abuja at a later date.

 “This new application procedure will begin in February at the U.S. Consulate in Lagos and will be extended shortly, thereafter, to the U.S. Embassy in Abuja,”
the statement disclosed. The US Mission disclosed that the new visa renewal application process is part of innovative measures introduced to make for easy application amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be recalled that on May 14, 2019, the US Mission in Nigeria suspended the Dropbox process and asked Nigerians to make physical visa renewal applications at the US Embassy in Abuja or the US Consulate General in Lagos.
