It’s true that Nigeria’s tech ecosystem is heavily dominated by startups based in Lagos. There’s also a good deal of activity in Abuja. But talk about the tech scene of other locations in the country is limited in comparison to coverage of the industry in the “Center of Excellence”. You will seldom find discussions about startups in Ibadan, for example.

But Ibadan, just like some of the other major urban centres in Nigeria, does have a thriving startup culture. It’s producing (and is producing) impressive tech companies. A number of them have even attracted attention and investments from beyond the country’s shores. In light of this fact, here’s our selection of the top startups in Ibadan, presented in no particular order:

Cardify

Cardify
Cardify
Cardify is a FinTech startup that’s solving Nigeria’s international payments problem. It’s doing this by enabling the creation of virtual dollar accounts, which can be funded with Naira or USDT deposits. This solution makes it possible for people in Nigeria to purchase items from international stores. The Cardify mobile app also lets users buy and sell gift cards, pay local and international bills, and access digital business cards. These services effectively plug everyday residents of Nigeria into global commerce and give them the chance to benefit from it. This startup is registered locally, as well as in the US and UK. Its African headquarters is at the Cocoa House, Ibadan.

HeyFood

Heyfood
HeyFood
The HeyFood delivery app facilitates the distribution of food ordered to the locations from which the orders originated. Restaurants and other food outlets can also register on the platform to begin receiving orders from customers. At this time, HeyFood serves diners and food enterprises in Ibadan, Lagos, and Abuja. Its Ibadan operation appears to be the largest, catering to restaurants and consumers all over the city. Its engagements in Lagos and Abuja are mostly in upscale areas. Dispatch riders are often needed to support HeyFood’s business, too, so it invites them to sign up with it for the chance to earn.

This is another app that’s coming to the rescue of Nigerians who want to shop on local and international online stores. On 1App, you can open a virtual naira or US dollar account that enables you to purchase things on your favourite global e-commerce platforms. Users can also pay for subscriptions (e.g. Netflix), buy flight tickets, pay tuition fees, settle bills for digital courses, and more. Other benefits offered by 1App include the ability to send money to and receive money from more than 20 African countries, and convert stablecoins into fiat (and vice versa). You can also generate account statements with it. There are no account opening or account maintenance fees. 1App is headquartered at Olubadan Avenue, Oluyole, Ibadan, and serves Nigerians all over the country.

Crop2Cash

Crop2Cash
Crop2Cash
Many segments of Nigeria’s tech ecosystem cater to urban, tech-savvy people. AgriTech, on the other hand, tends to serve farmers in rural communities. Crop2Cash is a startup in this mould. Its solutions are built for crop-growing farmers and are intended to increase their farm output (and therefore, their incomes). Crop2Cash pursues this ambition by providing farmers with access to inexpensive but effective tools and inputs, extension services, and USSD-supported mobile banking. There’s also an AI-powered hotline that delivers personalised agricultural advice to smallholder farmers. According to this startup, it has served more than 500,000 farmers in 13 states, with interventions that have produced substantial increases in yields and revenues.

Hutstack

Hutstack
Hutstack
Hutstack’s flagship offering is cloud-based property management software. It’s designed for landlords, real estate developers, and property-related associations. These groups can use the Hutstack software in different ways. Property owners utilise it to manage their operations and engage tenants and vendors. It also lets them automate rentals, track maintenance requests, and provide an online portal for tenants. Tracking relevant expenses, marketing and communications, document storage, and the creation of a customizable website are other things that Hutstack can do for landlords. What’s more, property management companies that use Hutstack can easily integrate it with leading business apps, so that their teams remain connected.
