After six months of exclusive breastfeeding, weaning begins. It’s basically the process of introducing other foods apart from breast milk to your baby. Weaning requires a lot of patience. Fortunately, it doesn’t call for an end to breastfeeding; so, your little one can continue to enjoy his breast milk.

Soybeans is one of the foods used to wean babies off breast milk. When it’s ground into powder, it can be added to pap or made into soymilk for babies to enjoy. Guess what? Soybean is a rich source of protein and fibre and these nutrients are good for your baby. Now, I know that you can easily buy soybeans powder from local stores around you. But learning how to make it from the scratch ensures that your child derives all the benefits of this food.

Before I show you how to prepare this dairy-free food for your baby, let me quickly add that even though soybeans powder can be made without the addition of any other ingredient, I prefer to add the ingredients listed below to my baby’s soybeans to boost its taste and nutritional value.


2 Cups of Soybeans

1 Cup of Roasted Groundnut

1/2 Cup of Crayfish

Dry fish

An unripe Plantain

Method of Preparation

Pour the soybeans in a tray and sort them by separating the good beans from the bad ones, the stones and the dirt. This should be done patiently; I mean, the whole point of homemade is to have food that is as clean and as wholesome as possible. So, ensure that your soybeans are free from impurities. After sorting, soak the beans in water for three to four days. Change the water after forty-eight hours. According to the kid nutritionist, Ifeyinwa Omesiete, this process which is known as fermentation helps to introduce probiotics into the legume. It also increases its nutritional value and makes it easier to digest.

While your soybeans are soaking, rinse and peel the plantain. Slice it thinly and either sundry or oven-dry it. Once dry, set it aside for later use. Clean the fish. Set it aside for later use as well.

Soak the groundnuts in boiling water till the colour of the water changes. Strain out the water, add salt to the groundnuts then either sun-dry or oven dry them. Afterwards, add garri to a clean saucepan and roast your groundnuts. After roasting, peel the groundnuts and set them aside for later use.

After three days of soaking the soybeans, rinse and sieve them. Afterwards, spread it out and air dry till all the moisture in it is gone. Now, roast the soybeans on medium heat while stirring constantly till it’s cooked through. Turn off the heat. Allow the soybeans to cool slightly then transfer, the plantain, groundnuts, dry fish and crayfish into a clean blender. Blend all ingredients till you have a smooth powder. Store in an airtight container.

Finally, I hope you adopt this method of making soybeans for your baby. It ensures easier digestion and reduces the risk of your infant eating raw or undercooked soybeans.
