  The Equator Prize emerges out of the Equator Initiative, a United Nations (UN) supported program for driving nature-based sustainability movements. This prize recognizes entities that support Indigenous people and local communities in building climate resilience with locally available resources. This year’s prize will be awarded to community-based initiatives that come up with natural solutions for sustainable development.

Awardees at the Equator Prize will have demonstrated the effectiveness of their solution within their context, as well as its applicability on a broader scale. And those solutions will deliver pathways to transforming global systems for the planet and its people.

Areas of Concern

These are the areas of concern for the Equator Prize:
  • Maintenance of in-tact ecosystems: mangroves, forests, other wetlands, and soils
  • Reinforcing indigenous’ people’s right to their lands and knowledge of their environment
  • Forest protection through participatory monitoring
  • Tackle water security
  • Create climate-resilient food systems
  • Development and promotion of nature-based solutions for reducing the impact of natural disasters (e.g. floods and droughts)

Benefits

Each Equator Prize winner will receive $10,000 and will get support to participate in policy dialogues and special events in 2025.

Eligibility

This program is open to initiatives that meet the following criteria:
  • Must have existed for at least 3 years, with actions that have been implemented for that duration
  • A local community-based initiative that operates in a rural area
  • Actions must be nature-based and deliver benefits that contribute to a minimum of two UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
