Career shift doesn’t only involve securing a new job, it goes as far as completely changing the type of work you do, including changing the industry for example, going from being an accountant to a software programmer.  It is not about finding a new job, it is about completely overhauling your career and finding a new direction for your future. Therefore, before you make a career shift, it is important that you weigh the pros and cons before changing careers While there are many advantages to changing your career, there are still some risks related to it, and these risks should be considered properly before making a shift in career. Some of the risks involved include: Employers will wonder why you left your previous job and will be nervous that you may leave their company just as quickly as you arrived.  Insecurity One of the major risks involved in changing a career is the fact that you may feel insecure at some point in your new job as you try to figure out how things work out in your new job and how to deal with challenges that might arise. Hence, if you are a person who is rather inflexible and is afraid to deal with many new things at a time, chances are that career changes may not be for you. Exposure to Job Competition Making a change of career has the tendency to open you up to sometimes harsh job competitions that you haven’t had to deal with since the last time you looked for a job, which may have been decades before. Securing a job in today’s employment market requires new approaches to searching, resumes, and interviewing, so you must be prepared to deal with new competition on an ever-changing playing field.

Exposure to Worse Situations When you decide to make a career shift, possibilities are that you could be jumping out of the pan and into the fire. This is a hard truth, in fact, you may make your situation even worse by switching your job because you may enter a job situation that is worse than your current career or a position with far more stress than you originally thought. Hence, before you change your job, make sure that you ask people you know about the working conditions in the respective company in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises in this regard. Adapting to a new Working Environment Another risk involved when you decide to change your career is that you will also have to adapt to a completely new working environment and a new corporate culture, because corporate cultures differ quite a lot over companies, and the company culture may simply not be in line with your personal values and beliefs. This means that if you are not flexible enough to adapt to these changes, you might experience difficulties with adapting to the new corporate culture if you switch your job. Proving Yourself All Over  Undoubtedly, in your previous career, you have worked hard over the years to have proven yourself worthy of the job, earned some respect, confidence and you are already established to some extent. However, in your current career, you have to start from the scratch to prove yourself again. This can cause additional stress and it may be much more convenient to stay in your old company if you have already built some level of respect. In conclusion, be sure that you have meticulously examined your options, weighed the risks involved in making a career shift, as this would help you in making the decision to either remain in your current career or proceed to a new career.
