The minister who is currently in Sal Island, Cape Verde, alongside other African ministers for culture and tourism, for the 64th Conference of the UNWTO Commission for Africa and second UNWTO Global Tourism Investment Forum, made this disclosure after a meeting with the Secretary-General of the UNWTO, Zurab Pololikashvili. Lai Mohammed went further to state that the focus of the 2022 UNWTO regional conference in Nigeria would be on the tourism and creative industry. He noted that the choice of the tourism and creative industry lies in the fact that comparatively, Nigeria is better known for areas such as music, films, and fashion, citing exploits made by Nigerian artistes such as Burna Boy and Wizkid alongside other Nigerian artistes on the global scene.

“Comparatively, Nigeria is not very strong in destination tourism though the country attracts many travellers who are more on businesses. Nigeria is better known for its music, films and for its culture, and Nigerian music and films are exported for foreign exchange. There are many Nigerian artistes that have gained global recognition, among who are Burna Boy and Wizkid, who won the latest Grammy Awards in different categories.’’ Lai Mohammed
The Nigerian minister did not fail to remind that Burna Boy sold out the O2 Arena in London with an incredible 12,000 ticket sales for his concert on August 27, 2021. It will be recalled that Nigeria hosted the 61st edition of the UNWTO Commission for Africa conference in 2018. Established on November 1, 1975, the UNWTO is a specialised global body charged with the responsibility of promoting responsible, sustainable, and universally accessible tourism.
