Naira Notes: The 5 Naira Note

What can one buy with the 5 naira note in Nigeria? While you think about that, here are some throwback moments of the note. The ₦5 note is the least naira note currency still in circulation today. It was introduced on January 1, 1973, and redesigned in 2007. In 2009, the paper material was replaced with polymer.

Sir Tafawa Balewa is the face on the ₦5 note. He began his career as an educationist, inspecting schools, before going into politics where he became Nigeria’s first Prime Minister. The back view of the note is an illustration of Nkpokiti dancers from South Eastern Nigeria.

So, back to the question, what can you buy with the 5 naira note? Recent polls have mentioned sweets and bubble gums, and very few items of very little value. However, if you think that the ₦5 note has been so badly devalued and should be phased out, remember that you will need to add 5 naira to 140 to buy a litre of petrol, ten saved 5 nairas can buy you a bottle of water, and two 5 naira notes will give you ten naira, which in turn will get you thinking of what to buy with it.
