Through the years, I’ve come to understand that due to status, age, culture or preference, there are different types of holiday makers. For instance, without an exhilarating outdoor adventure, the nature lover’s vacation isn’t complete. The exciting ‘summers’ with relatives, might be a well suited holiday for the kids. On the other hand, the ideal vacation for some women would be grabbing a real bargain while relishing the stunning sights of a cosmopolitan city.

Although most individuals anticipate the various perks of a well-deserved break to unwind, rekindle passion, experience other cultures, taste new food and to spend quality time with relatives and children; there are some who don’t mind a quiet lie in, occasional room service, having the bed and other facilities cleaned and restocked frequently. This kind of setting might not appeal to everyone but could be ideal for a short trip for two or a family of four.

So if you don’t mind being pampered with hot and freshly prepared meals via room service, valet parking, gym, swimming pool, luxurious spa, housekeeping etc., a decent 3, 4 or 5-star hotel could quite easily exceed your expectations, without necessarily breaking the bank and if you can spot a good deal. To help minimise costs, here are six tips.

1. Pay any outstanding credit card bill. If you intend using your credit card, it’s worth paying off any outstanding balance before leaving for your trip. Then while on holiday, you can keep track of your expenses without accumulating extra debt.

2. Don’t travel with all debit/credit cards. Don’t travel with all your cards. Leave a few at home so as to minimise the risk of losing all at the same time.

3. Keep your valuables safe. Most rooms have safes in the wardrobe. It’s wiser to keep valuables like cash, passport, gadgets or expensive jewellery in the safe rather than your luggage. Anyone could tamper with your luggage.

4. Always ask, never assume. Depending on the type of room and hotel, most have a mini bar and fridge stocked with drinks and other delicious treats. But always ask if they are complimentary i.e. free as they are fitted with weight sensors and are slightly more expensive. The hotel could bill you for items consumed. 5. Avoid travelling with expensive gadgets. No matter which country you visit, pickpockets aren’t far off and can spot a visitor from miles away. So if possible, avoid travelling with expensive gadgets as they are quite pricey and fragile. Most smartphones have brilliant cameras.

6. Pay less, eat more. When eating out, you could reduce your bill by skipping desert. The appetiser and main course are usually quite filling especially if you’re visiting the States. They are renowned for serving huge portions. Also, if you can’t finish your meal, don’t be shy to ask for a ‘to-go’ container to put any leftovers. If there’s a microwave in the hotel room, you can reheat it.
