A Kung-Fu-Wushu coach based in Bayelsa State, Tony Tuayerin, has encouraged state associations and the Nigeria Wushu Kung-Fu Federation (NWKF), to take advantage of the listing of the sport at the 19th National Sport Festival (NSF), to foster the growth of the game across the nation.
Kung-Fu-Wushu is a martial art sport with a long history from China. And it was one of the 37 sports participated in at the last edition of the NSF in Abuja, last December.
Tuayerin believes that stakeholders and associations can leverage on the Federation’s fine outing at the 19th NSF to organize a number of national events that will in turn grow the sports across states in the country.
“The NSF is the most famous sporting event in the country; it has created a friendly platform for athletes to be showcased and discovered for international championships.
“Kung-Fu-Wushu was featured and medals won; so, it behooves on states through their associations to draw up activities and ensure that the sport gets more recognition. With increased activities, athletes will be meaningfully engaged and developed.”
— Tony Tuayerin
The coach implored the NWKF to organize national championships quarterly to encourage more athletes train and improve their skills, before they can represent the country internationally.
He also added that the growth of the sport in the country is greatly hinged on the development of its athletes through state and national events.
