The advantages of caring for your wigs are uncountable. It increases the life span of the wig, it makes you smell good, it saves unnecessary costs and so much more.
Here are four ways of caring for your wigs.
- Keep your wigs properly
A good way to take care of any fashion item is by storing them properly and carefully. You should have a place in your closet where your wigs should be kept. You can wear your wigs on mannequin or hang it on loops in an upright position to prevent it from tangling. If it is exposed to dust, you should consider keeping it in a covered place.
You are decreasing the longevity of your wigs by carelessly tossing them around or keeping them where they can be stepped on. It is an unhealthy habit. Remember that you are wearing it on your head and it will definitely come in contact with your skin. If the wig is dirty and filled with germs, you are unconsciously transferring it to your skin.
When you don’t keep your wig properly, it does not last long and can even cause itching on your body, especially your face and neck.
- Use appropriate hair tools and products on your wigs
Endeavor to buy the right tools and products for your wigs. Human hair, synthetic hair, curly wig, braided wig and straight wig require different methods of care. When purchasing tools and products for cleaning your wig, you should buy the ones that are relevant to your wigs.
There are hair brushes and combs that are better suited for curly hair. Remember you want to retain the curls and make them voluminous and bouncy as you can. You don’t want your straight wig looking like a bird nest, you want it straight, soft and sleek as possible.
You don’t have to buy all the hair products in the market, just buy the relevant ones.
- Wash your wigs
Yes, wash your wigs. This might sound strange and absurd to some but it is necessary for you to wash your wigs.
Note that, the way you wash your natural hair is not the same way your wig should be washed. Wigs are held together by thread and glue, so you may want to be careful and not apply too much pressure.

First, soak the wig in shampoo and lukewarm or warm water. The water should not be neither hot nor cold. Next, carefully comb the shampoo or conditioner out of the wig with your wig comb.(Not all wigs should be combed while wet, if you notice the hair is shredding or not combing well, it is advisable for you to wait till the hair is dry). Then, rinse the wig with warm water until the product is all out and let it dry by itself.
When washing your wigs, don’t wash as though you are washing clothes or scrubbing a rug, be gentle. Don’t wash your wigs daily or weekly. Once or twice in a month in fine, depending on the usage.
- Don’t sleep or shower with your wigs
Except, your wig is glued to your hair, don’t sleep or shower with your wig. It drastically reduces its lifespan.
Just as it is wrong to sleep with make-up or shoes, it is not advisable to sleep with your wig on.
If you must sleep with the wig, make sure you cover your hair when sleeping or bathing.
In conclusion, as necessary as it is to take care of your wig, it is more important to take care of your natural hair. Don’t leave your natural hair untidy because you wear wigs everyday. It is unhealthy, turn a new leaf today.
