Nigeria moved one step up from the 63rd position it occupied in January to 62nd in the latest FIFA ranking released yesterday. Despite Super Eagles’ disappointing outing at 2016 CHAN held in Rwanda, which ultimately led to the surprise resignation of coach Sunday Oliseh, Nigeria moved three places to 63rd position back in January. The latest FIFA ranking table sees Nigeria make their way up to 11th in Africa. Surprisingly, Cape Verde occupies the number position in Africa and are ranked 31st in the world. For reigning AFCON champions, Cote d’Ivoire are second in Africa and 36th in the world. They are closely followed by Algeria, Ghana and Tunisia in third, fourth and fifth positions respectively. Most decorated team in the history of Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt are ranked 53rd in the world, which sees them occupy the seventh position in Africa. Nigeria and Egypt will lock horns in the AFCON qualifiers later this month, with the first leg to be played in Kaduna on March 25th and the second in Alexandra on March 29. Senegal, DR Congo, Congo and Cameroon complete the top 10 in Africa in 6th, 8th, 9th and 10th positions respectively.
