  The Custodians of African Literature (COAL) is expanding its Grassroots Accelerated Education Microgrant for 2025 following a successful pilot program that supported 125 children last year, with 13 successfully transitioning to formal education. The fund partners with local educators to co-develop solutions for out-of-school and underserved children in Nigeria, rather than imposing external approaches.

The 2025 COAL Grassroots Accelerated Education Microgrant focuses on supporting both formal and informal inclusive learning projects serving underprivileged children and youth, specifically in Plateau State.

Who Can Apply

Applicants must be:
  • Legally registered non-profit community organisations or social enterprises operating in Nigeria
  • Leading literacy improvement initiatives in low-income communities within Plateau State
  • Locally driven with demonstrated community engagement (including parents, educators, government officials, and other stakeholders)
  • Equipped with a comprehensive 12-month implementation plan detailing timeline, budget, and expected outcomes
  • Demonstrating potential for long-term sustainability and scalability
  • Implementing innovative approaches (such as play-based learning, technology integration, arts-based education, or other creative methods)
  • Operating with robust child protection policies
  • Committed to monitoring, evaluation, and continuous improvement
  • Focused on serving marginalised children and youth up to 18 years
  • Holders of organisational bank accounts (personal accounts not eligible)
  • Previous grant recipients may submit new applications if they can demonstrate scalability or new approaches for continued impact.

Funding and Support

Selected projects will receive:
  • Financial support up to ₦2,000,000 (with larger grants possible for high-impact initiatives)
  • All applicants (successful and unsuccessful) will receive technical and institutional support in:
  1. Non-profit management and governance
  2. Development sector project management
  3. Monitoring, evaluation, and learning fundamentals
  4. Resource mobilisation strategies
  5. Financial management practices
  6. Accelerated education methodologies
  7. Child safeguarding protocols
  8. Youth volunteer assistance for implementation (successful applicants)
