May 27th is the day set aside in Nigeria to celebrate children and their presence in our lives nationally. It is also the day we remember to let out the inner child in us because all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

On the 10th of May 2021, the Presidential Task Force (PTF) announced a new set of COVID-19 restrictions that would last till June 11th 2021. With the ban on large gatherings beyond 50 persons and shutting down recreational centres, it may seem as though the Children’s Day celebrations are about to be ruined. But it doesn’t have to be. So far interstate travel has not been restricted, so you can still use tourism as a way to celebrate the children in your life this year. Below are some ways to spice up the children’s day celebration with tourism/tourism activities:

Focus on What they want

Is your child adventurous? Then plan an adventurous activity for the day like hiking up a sandhill or rock in Jos, renting kayaking equipment for the family in Lekki or taking a leisure boat ride in Epe. You can even set up a bouncy castle or trampoline and take turns bouncing around. If they are nature lovers, plan a trip to the zoo, a plantation, a farm, or chase a waterfall and hang out in nature. If your child is a gamer, Arcades may be out this season but board games/puzzles aren’t. Also, try to arrange for digital games that they can play on a tablet or flat-screen TV (e.g. PS4) at home. If they love reading, visit a library or buy a new set of storybooks from a children’s book store like Bookworm Cafe. As long as it is something they want to do, they will love it.

Surprise Them

If your kids love to travel, take them on a short trip of no more than 2 hours to and fro to a nearby town for a city tour. Just ensure you adhere to all the COVID-19 guidelines. You can make it a private family tour. Take them somewhere they may have wanted to go to but there was never enough time to do so. Get them a gift of something they always wanted or buy their favourite snack. If your children are not picky with food, now would be a great time for a little food tourism. Buy a meal they rarely eat like Chinese fried rice with prawn sauce. Or make them an English breakfast of bread and tea with baked beans, eggs and bacon. Get an ice cream cake from Cold stone or Cactus restaurant. Allow them to taste Cashew nut or Walnut or eat mangos and agbalumo which are in season. Take them for a train ride if your city has a metro station. Visit an art and craft studio or even a museum (we hope these will remain open since these are more educational than recreational). Whatever it is, do something pleasantly unexpected for them.

Make Each Moment With Them Fun

If the restrictions in your state do not encourage going out then focus on recreating tourism activities at home. Get paint brushes, watercolour, put on a discard-able outfit, start painting and having fun. Keep a little fruit juice for occasional sips and voila; you have a Paint-and-sip experience. Roleplay, listen to music and jump around, dance if you are good at it. You could also get a ball, go to an open field and play football or just run around. The goal is to make sure everyone is having a good time. Remember, you need to take time off work and spend it with the children in your life because their celebration won’t be complete without you. The beauty of tourism is that it is about creating lasting memories with those we love. Let’s make sure the children feel the love on their day. Happy Children’s Day to all children, the future of tomorrow. Featured Image Source: Pinterest
