
The moringa is a widely sought-after plant because of it’s nutritional and medicinal values, and its ability to grow well in most environments. It is a fast-growing, slender and deciduous tree that can grow up to 12m in a 45cm diameter in a year. The bark is thick and pale whitish grey in colour. The seed, located in green hairy pods, is brown and three-sided with whitish wings.
Though commonly cultivated in India, the moringa thrives well in Nigeria and in other semi-arid, tropical and subtropical parts of the world. Since cultivation does not require expensive means and the tree hardly requires much space, it can be grown in homes as a subsistent source, and on a larger scale for business.
Edible parts include the leaves, pods, seeds, and oil extracted from the seed. However, due to toxicity, adverse effects might result from the use of its bark, root or flowers.
The leaves are a rich source of vitamins B, C, A and K, iron, magnesium, manganese and other minerals. About 100g of fresh leaves contain 8g of carbohydrate, 2g of dietary fibre, 1.4g of fat, 9.4g of protein and 78g of water. Extracts from boiled leaves can be taken as tea, the leaves can be cooked and used like other leafy vegetables and can be dried and blended into powder for use.
The pods are a rich source of vitamin C, dietary fibre, potassium, magnesium and manganese, and can be eaten after parboiling.
The seeds also contain B and C vitamins and minerals. Though they have a sharp sour-sweet taste, they are a ready source of nutrients as they can be eaten raw.
Oil extracted from moringa seeds are clear and odourless, and stay long periods without going rancid. They can be used as food, for skin and hair, and as a base for perfumes and other cosmetics.
Moringa is a powerful antioxidant and is generally used for cleansing the system and boosting immunity. Traditionally, moringa has been used to prevent, treat or alleviate effects of certain ailments such as constipation, anaemia, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, diarrhoea and stomach disorders. It has been used to boost the body’s immunity, to reduce inflammations, blood sugars and cholesterol levels, and as a general nutritional supplement. Products have also been used to increase sex drive and as a natural means of birth control, thus, it might be safe to keep away from products during pregnancy or conception.
