Having high self-esteem makes life a whole lot easier. It affects how you treat yourself and others and can take you far in your personal and professional life.

Improving self-esteem is more about letting go of bad habits than forming new ones. People with esteem issues are held back by the negative thoughts and behaviours they have formed over the years. By letting go of these habits, they can change the way they see themselves and enjoy the benefits that come with self-assurance.

Below are some of such habits:

Dwelling On Failure

People with low self-esteem often put more emphasis on all the things that could go wrong. Every little failure spells doom for them and they are ready to give up at the drop of a hat. People with developed self-esteem are keen on learning from their failures. They also understand that improvement is possible if they put in the work.

Trying To Please Others

Because they know can’t please everyone all of the time, confident people prioritise things that bring them satisfaction and fulfilment. They understand that they must achieve their goals and aspirations on their own terms. And they do not let the opinions of others steer them from their path.

Trying To Always Be Perfect

Everyone would love to be perfect. In itself, it is not a bad thing. But since it is impossible to achieve perfection, striving to be perfect is often a sign of low self-esteem.

This can lead to a lack of creativity in problem-solving, exacerbating self-esteem difficulties.

Those who have strong self-esteem are unconcerned about the outcome and strive for excellence without expecting perfection. They understand that mistakes are unavoidable in life and each one comes with a lesson for the future.

Avoid Being Vulnerable

Confident people have no problem being vulnerable. However, those with low self-esteem hide their best qualities behind a facade. Instead of hiding the true self, be upfront and honest in whatever you do.

When you accept every aspect of who you are, you allow others to accept those aspects as well. When that happens, you’ll understand that striving for perfection doesn’t make people like you anymore.
