Award Categories

The 2025 African Fact-Checking Awards features three categories, with each offering prizes to winners and runners-up:
  • Fact-Check of the Year by a Working Journalist
  • Fact-Check of the Year by a Professional Fact-Checker
  • Fact-Check of the Year by a Student Journalist

Eligibility Requirements

Submissions must:
  • Be original work created by the individual or team listed on the entry form.
  • Debunk a misleading or false claim on an important topic originating from or relevant to Africa.
  • Be an original fact-checking piece published or broadcast between May 1, 2024 and June 7, 2025.

Prize Structure

  • Working journalist and professional fact-checker category winners: $3,000 each
  • Runners-up in these categories: $1,500 each
  • Student journalist category winner: $2,000
  • Student journalist runner-up: $1,000

Evaluation Criteria

Entries will be judged on:
  • Significance: The importance of the investigated claim and its potential societal impact.
  • Testing: The thoroughness and fairness of the evidence-gathering process.
  • Presentation: The clarity and accessibility of how evidence is presented.
Impact: The fact-check’s influence on public discourse, including corrections prompted or media reach achieved. Application Deadline: June 7, 2025. Apply Now
