The Africa Agri-Food Development Programme serves as a bridge connecting Irish and African enterprises, helping them discover and capitalise on promising opportunities to share their knowledge across Africa, expanding into new markets while strengthening bilateral trade relations between Ireland and the continent. Using a matched grant funding model, the initiative provides agri-food enterprises of various scales from both Ireland and Africa with a valuable chance to cultivate and maximise benefits from innovative collaborations with partners in sub-Saharan African nations.
Eligible Business Categories
Applicants must operate agri-food businesses that have been officially registered or incorporated in Ireland or any of the 19 qualifying African nations for a minimum of 24 months before submitting their AADP application. Organisations of any scale or legal structure may apply, including:- Micro enterprises
- Companies
- Cooperatives
- Partnerships
- SMEs
- Sole traders
- Social enterprises
- Farming groups
- Registered commercial farming networks
- Any other business structure

Project Criteria
Every proposal must:- Have a commercial focus.
- Be executed within one or more of the 19 qualifying African nations.
- Clearly show how it will make a significant contribution to sustainable food system development, aligning where feasible with Ireland’s international development strategy, A Better World, and UN Sustainable Development Goals in the selected African nation(s).
- Provide clear justification for why government funding is crucial for the initiative, including how it will help secure additional financing sources later.
- Establish why the applicant(s) possess the qualifications to successfully execute the proposed project, referencing their background, expertise, and capabilities, and how these align with project goals, activities, and outcomes.
- Confirm that all applicants maintain proper governance, financial oversight, and anti-fraud measures.
- Outline how the project plans to exchange, build, and/or utilise shared expertise between Ireland and Africa in the relevant project domain.
- Describe how the project aims to create or enhance mutual trade between Ireland and Africa.

Required Documentation
Every application must include supporting materials such as:- An Irish Tax Clearance Certificate – required for all applicants, including those from Africa, obtained from the Irish Revenue Commissioners.
- A detailed project budget showing expenditure breakdown, funding sources, activities, and equipment.
- A project timeline outlining key phases and activities needed to achieve project goals.
- A collaboration framework covering the project duration.
