Maduka Okoye is on his first competitive outing with the Super Eagles.

Super Eagles of Nigeria assistant captain, William Troost-Ekong, has hailed the impact of his international teammate Maduka Okoye on the Nigerian national team.

Okoye who is the first choice goalkeeper of the three-time African champions was impressive on his Africa Cup of Nations debut against the Pharaohs of Egypt on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, Nigeria’s opening game at the 2022 edition of the continental showpiece. Ekong hailed the 22-year-old while speaking to the official website of Watford FC.
“We had a few players making their debuts at AFCON including Maduka, who is a Watford player now. I think he’s been very consistent since he came in, which can be quite rare for a young goalkeeper. I remember his first game where he made his debut against Brazil in Singapore, in a friendly game two years ago, and ever since he has been very consistent.’’ William Troost-Ekong
The Watford FC defender described the Nigerian goalkeeper as a “calming presence’’ to the Super Eagles team.

“He is always coming for the ball, talks a lot during the game and is reliable which is the main thing you want from someone behind you. He is a calming presence to our team and I’m really comfortable playing with him. I think he’s enjoying the opportunity to step up and secure his place as the No.1 for Nigeria.” Ekong
Okoye is expected to be between the sticks when Nigeria confront Sudan in their second group game at the ongoing AFCON on Saturday, January 15, 2022.
