The former Super Eagles defensive midfielder was sworn in alongside 26 other commissioners on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, by State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu after screening and confirmation by the Abia State House of Assembly. Governor Ikpeazu urged Ojigwe and other commissioners to see their appointment as a call to duty and ensure efficiency in carrying out their duties. Ojigwe, 44, was born in Aba and featured for the Super Eagles between 1994 and 2002, earning 17 caps for the three-time African champions with two goals to his name. The former Super Eagles star was part of the Amodu Shuaibu led national team that finished third in the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations in Mali.

He was also part of the Nigerian national Under-17 team that won the 1993 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Japan with the likes of Wilson Oruma, Nwankwo Kanu, Celestine Babayaro, and others. At club level, he featured for Nigerian Professional Football League giants Enyimba, before plying his trade abroad for top European sides like Bayern Leverkusen, Borussia Monchengladbach, and 1860 Munich. With his appointment, Ojigwe now joins the list of ex-Super Eagles stars to have gained political appointments.
