  US-based Nigerian surgeon, Dr Uchechi Iweala, has made a huge medical statement in Maryland, United States, after becoming one of the first spinal surgeons to carry out a successful navigated lumbar spinal fusion with the use of a robot.

With this achievement, Dr Uchechi joins the list of Nigerians just like his mother and Director-General of the World Trade Organization, WTO, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who has projected Nigeria in a positive light globally. Reacting to her son’s achievement on Thursday, October 28, a proud Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala tweeted:
“Congratulations Dr Uchechi Iweala, on being one of the first spinal surgeons in Maryland to perform a successful navigated lumbar spinal fusion using a robot! So proud to be your Mum! Keep it going!”
A board eligible, a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon with specialisation in spine surgery, Dr Uchechi Iweala is vast in the field of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, Spinal Fusion/Arthrodesis, Robotic Spine Surgery, Cervical and Lumbar Disc Replacement, Spinal Deformity, Nerve Releases, Degenerative Disc Disease, Spinal Stenosis, Fracture Care, Spondylolisthesis and Trauma, and Spinal Injections.

Dr Iweala who earned his Bachelor’s degree with honours at Harvard College, alongside his MD/MBA from Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School, grew up in Maryland and attended St. Albans in DC. In a bid to improve his expertise, the high profile surgeon returned to DC to complete his residency training in Orthopaedic surgery (George Washington University). After successful residency training, he would go further to complete a fellowship in spine surgery at New York University. Publisher of numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed academic papers (some of his works are in the International Journal of Spine Surgery and the Journal of Orthopaedics), Dr Iweala’s research interest includes the minimization of reoperation after spinal fusion, cutting down on the use of narcotics in spine surgery, and maximization of the quality of care and value for patients of spine surgery.
