Last year, the observance was celebrated in multiple cities. This year, the celebration will be hosted by Cote d’Ivoire. It’ll be a chance for the world to see the people that make up the tourism statistics and to think of the tourism of tomorrow. According to Mr Siandou Fofana Minister of Tourism and Leisure of Côte d’Ivoire, Côte d’Ivoire as a destination has been repeatedly reaffirmed, and thus they welcome everyone with open arms and with the smile that befits their hospitable tradition. This year, the theme for world tourism day 2021 is Tourism For Inclusive Growth. It is an opportunity to celebrate tourism’s ability to drive inclusive development and the role it plays in promoting respect while generating opportunities for many millions across the globe. The theme means using tourism as a means of growth for all groups and classes of people. That is, tourism becoming a tool used to improve the economic and social wellbeing of individuals who are vulnerable and disadvantaged by circumstances.

A clear example of this in Nigeria is turning the reputation of Makoko from a slum to a tourist attraction. Tour companies/operators create beauty out of mire so the culture and way of life of vulnerable Nigerians can come to the limelight. And as you know, tourism injects funds into the society, these locals will have direct access to tourism funds from visitors. Nigeria joined this year’s celebration with five days of activities hosted in Kebbi State. These activities include international media briefings, mini-durbar by Argungu Emirate Council, scintillating cultural displays, charity polo matches, guided tours of prominent tourist sites and the turbanning of Alhaji Lai Muhammed, the present Minister of Information and Culture, as the ‘Kaakakin’ Kebbi. The grand finale of these activities is on the 27th of September and the entire event is meant to highlight the country’s rich cultural tourism destinations and leading products. If you live in that part of the country, take out time to visit. If not, follow the happenings on television from national stations like NTA. If you want to participate as a content creator, take pictures of at least 300 dpi or make videos of one minute or less of Workers of the tourism sector, Local communities and Travelers engaging in local activities and events. Upload them to your social media pages and use the hashtag #UNWTO to join the party. Featured Image Source: UNWTO
