Therefore, it is important to identify the reasons for your decreased appetite by consulting a doctor. Here are some reasons why you may have lost your appetite.

Stress

The body’s reaction to stress leads to a release of chemicals such as adrenaline which leads to faster heartbeat/rate and slower digestion. This can cause a loss of appetite. Sometimes, stress causes some people to overeat due to the release of a hormone called cortisol. However, loss of appetite is common as well.

Medication

Loss of appetite is a side effect of many drugs. Popular drugs that tend to have this effect include antibiotics, antifungals, and muscle relaxants. Drugs for depression, high blood pressure, and Parkinson’s disease are also common culprits. If you haven’t been eating, speak with your doctor to determine if any of your prescriptions are to blame.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is often characterised by increased appetite, however, many mothers-to-be may experience a drop in hunger due to nausea. This usually occurs during the first trimester and can happen at any time of the day. To alleviate this problem, it is best to eat easy-to-digest foods.

Cancer

A lack of appetite is a typical cancer side effect. Nausea, discomfort, and dehydration may be caused by the disease and its therapies, such as radiation and chemotherapy. They can even alter the flavour or odour of foods. If you’re having trouble eating enough at meals, talk to your doctor. You might need to consume 6 to 8 smaller meals per day.

Ageing

Many older people experience a drop in appetite which could be due to a number of factors. As you become older, digestion slows, and you tend to feel fuller for longer. Changes in your sense of smell, taste, or vision may also make food look less appealing. Consult your doctor to identify what could be wrong. Featured Image Source: Central Alabama Wellness
