  New applications for Nigerian international passport have been suspended until June 1, 2021, according to the Nigeria Immigration Service. This information was disclosed by the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Mohammad Babandede, on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, during a briefing with newsmen.

The immigration chief further revealed that the directive to halt the application process for passports was given by Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola.
‘The process of receiving and processing all fresh passport applications nationwide is suspended till 1st June 2021, when the new passport regime would have taken effect.’ Mohammad Babandede
Commenting further, the NIS chief noted that the suspension is in a bid to help the commission concentrate on clearance of all passport applications that have been received prior to May 17, 2021.

‘The suspension of receiving and processing of fresh passport applications is to allow for clearance of every passport application that was received before 17th of May 2021.’ Babandede
Mr Babandede also revealed that all portals for payment have been closed and will be open by June 1st, while a task force will be sent to passport offices to ensure the backlog is cleared. He also disclosed that deputy comptrollers have been deployed to passport centres to monitor the situation and see to it that the new directive is followed.
