In a time when Nigerians have strongly pushed against police brutality with ongoing campaigns for police reforms in the country, Nigerian national team star, Alex Iwobi, has lent his voice to the movement after unveiling his new boot which has the ‘’end police brutality,’’ statement on it.

It will be recalled that Nigerians took to the streets from October 8, 2020, to protest against the Nigerian police unit, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS, which was notable for brutalizing innocent citizens amongst other forms of human rights abuse) and police brutality in the most populous black nation on earth. The peaceful protests would end on October 20, 2020, after protesters were shot by Nigerian soldiers and police officers at the Lekki toll gate. A lot of lives were lost and numerous others left injured from the Lekki massacre which has gone down in history as a day the Nigerian government made war on citizens it swore to protect. However, the movement gained global attention with celebrities posting the hashtag #EndSARS online as calls for global policymakers to take action heightens.

Iwobi who scored twice during Nigeria’s 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier 4-4 draw against Sierra Leone on November 13, 2020, took to his Twitter handle to display his latest kit acquisition. Iwobi, 24, has featured eight times for Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton this season and has been heaped with praises especially for his performance in the club’s 3-2 away win against Fulham which saw the Nigerian deployed to a new right wing-back position by his Italian manager.
