Eating spicy food

When eaten, on an empty stomach, spicy foods may irritate the stomach lining, leading to acidic reactions and cramps. Due to their pungency, spicy foods can trigger indigestion.

Taking certain medications

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, paracetamol, and ibuprofen should not be taken on an empty stomach. Not only does this reduce their effectiveness, but it can also cause significant health problems including gastric bleeding. This rule also stands for a variety of other medications. While most medications will indicate on their labels whether or not they can be taken on an empty stomach, you should still consult your doctor or pharmacist if you’re not sure.

Drinking alcohol

Taking alcohol on an empty stomach increases the rate at which you get drunk. While this may seem harmless for some, it comes with a lot of negative repercussions for others. This can have a significant effect on your liver, heart, and kidneys in the long run.

Working out

A study published in the Journal of Science and Medicine In Sport showed that working out on an empty stomach might limit your performance and potential to achieve the best results. However, this is not always the case. Always listen to your body. If you find yourself lacking energy during a workout, eat something the next time.

Drinking coffee or tea

Drinking coffee or tea first in the morning may be common practice for many, but it is not a good idea. It stimulates the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the digestive system and causes gastritis and other digestive tract issues.
