The country’s pharmaceutical industry could be worth $94 billion in the next ten years if current trends persist. And while a lot of medicines available at hospitals and local pharmacies are still imported, there’s been a rise in the number of Nigerian brands participating in the market. One such company is Fidson Healthcare, a firm that’s stayed prominent on the drug production and distribution scene for decades. It boasts a wide array of products, ranging from antibacterial and antimalarial drugs to analgesics and medicines affecting the blood. Fidson was set up in 1995 as a pharmaceutical product distributor. Just a year later, it began importing its own brand of medicines. By 2002, it completed its first local manufacturing plant. Soon it was distributing medicines produced in this facility to the domestic market. In 2005, Fidson became Nigeria’s first local manufacturer of anti retroviral drugs. Two years later, it set up a second manufacturing plant and had its Quality Management System certified by the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON). And in 2008, it was listed on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).

The company has since built its third and fourth factories. The fourth, located in Ota, Ogun State, and built to be compliant with WHO requirements, was completed in 2016. Fidson’s range of products includes antibacterial drugs like Cipriotab and Tetracycline; antimalarial drugs such as Emal and Arthemed; and Tribotan, an antifungal product. There are also cough and cold medicines, antacids, and antihistamine syrup. Other drugs manufactured by Fidson include antihypertensive and lipid-lowering agents, blood tonics, and pain and palliative care drugs. Antidepressants and anxiety medicines are also produced, as are multivitamins and supplements for osteoarthritis and other conditions. Thanks to the consistency in the quality of its products, Fidson has won several awards and recognitions from various organizations. These include the FS sector leader award (2009), Nigerian Healthcare Excellence Award (2014), Frost and Sullivan Growth, Innovation Excellence Awards (2014), and Pearl Award for Pharmaceutical Manufacturer of the Year (2015).   Featured Image Source: Africa Financials
