As an undergraduate in the university, you do a number of introductory courses. These courses are a guide that gradually ease you into your course of study. In cooking, it is no different. You learn and keep learning until you become a master. Mistakes are normal and even after you’ve learnt the art, you’ll still err from time to time. Today, I’ll be sharing some general kitchen tips with you. Consider it a beginner’s guide of some sort. I hope you learn a new trick or two from it. Oya, let’s go.

If your hand stings from chopping pepper, rub salt or [palm] oil on it.

Place oil-stained transparent bowls under the sun for a couple of hours and you’d have clean, oil-free bowls afterwards.

To reuse cooking oil, first fry ginger in it. The ginger would absorb the taste of whatever was cooked in the oil and it will be as good as new.

If you burn your hand with hot pot or steam from hot water, put baking flour on it immediately. This also applies for kitchen accidents involving fire. The baking flour will help the affected part to heal without scars.

Empty bad tasting oil into a deep pot. Boil until the water left in it dries up. The oil will taste better afterwards.

If your soup is salty, Irish potato can come to your rescue. All you have to do is peel, rinse and put it in your pot of soup. Afterwards, warm the soup and you’ll notice salt has reduced well.

Wash eggs with detergent before boiling to harden the shells and prevent cracks.

Blunt knives could be more dangerous than sharp knives when preparing food. This is because there’s a higher risk of cutting one’s self as one applies more force when using blunt knives. So, sharpen blunt knives and enjoy working with ease.

Place a piece of white bread in a pot of burnt rice. Cover the pot with the lid for about 5 minutes. This is to allow the bread to absorb the burnt smell. When the time has elapsed, open the pot and take out the burnt bread. Serve and enjoy as the burnt smell would be gone.

It’s important that you store your food stuffs and ingredients properly to prevent insects and rodents from contaminating them.

Finally, don’t think these kitchen tips are just for beginners. Those with cooking experience can also benefit from them. So, learn and use them when situation demands.
