There’s a thriving segment of the Nigerian textile that’s dedicated to meeting the demand for classy traditional clothing. This includes numerous businesses, ranging from micro-scale enterprises to large-scale manufacturers. One of these companies, AdireWorld, specializes in the production and sale of the famed Adire. It makes these colourful, richly patterned textiles at its facility in Lagos, and supplies them to individuals, wholesale merchants, and businesses. AdireWorld was founded in 2017 by Arewa Adesanya. She says she forayed into textile design when she recognized it as a perfect intersection of her passions—art and fashion. She’s also determined to share the beauty of the Adire craft with the world. Adesanya intends AdireWorld to be more than just another design outfit. For her, the designs on the fabrics produced at AdireWorld exist to tell stories. She’s just as keen on the artistic nature of her work as she is on beating business performance metrics. This partly explains her company’s approach to making Adire. It uses the traditional manual tie-and-dye method, a technique that’s been around for more than a century. As a result, the textiles it produces have the visible hand-made characteristics that purists covet.

AdireWorld’s target market includes fashion designers, interior designers, furniture companies, photographers, wholesale merchants, businesses, and private individuals. It has supplied clothing designed with traditional patterns to corporate organizations and taken on large-scale production projects for several customers. Clients can request specific designs for their wares, or have AdireWorld decide on the aesthetics of their project. Textile products may be purchased via its online channels, or from its physical location in Lagos. AdireWorld also hosts training for aspiring fashion designers. Since its inception, the company has trained hundreds of individuals from across the country in the art of making outstanding clothing. This aspect of the company’s operations continues to grow with every passing year. This growth hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2019, AdireWorld was named one of Nigeria’s Top 100 Emerging SMEs by Connect Nigeria. It was selected from thousands of other businesses after voting and screening processes, thanks in part to the support it received from its loyal followers. The company looks forward to greater things in the near future, including getting a permanent workspace and walk-in store. It hopes that, in the long run, it will teach the art of Adire production to the world beyond Nigeria’s borders.
