Asisat Lamina Oshoala is a Nigerian professional footballer on the books for Chinese side, Dalian Quanjian FC in the Chinese Women’s Super League.
The forward was born on October 9, 1994 in Ikorodu, Lagos, where she picked up her love for football while watching Liverpool men’s team on television as a chid.
Asisat was born into a home with successful parents in Lagos’ booming gold and fashion market. Growing up, her parents had hoped that one day she would carve a niche for herself amongst other successful Nigerians in any industry of her choosing. However, football was not one of the choices given to the young Asisat.
As her love for football grew, so did her parent’s disapproval, until the day came when she would decide to halt her plans of being a lawyer to focus on a career in football. It was not an easy decision for the youngster, even more-so for her parents who wanted their daughter to further her education.
Soon enough Asisat was living her big dream as an International footballer in England with Liverpool Ladies FC. Before she moved abroad, Asisat played for FC Robo from 2009 to 2013, after which she was signed by Rivers Angels for two seasons.
On 23 January 2015, Asisat joined Liverpool Ladies, and for a time the Nigerian was lackluster. However, she soon enough regained her form and ended her goal drought. In a rather horrible turn of events, she suffered a knee injury and was out of action for rest of the season.
Asisat would go on to spend the 2016/2017 season with Arsenal Ladies, before she was signed by her current club, Dalian Quanjian in February of 2017.
The two time African champion has quite a number of personal accolades to her name, including:
Aiteo CAF Best Player Award 2017 (Female)
2015 BBC Women’s Footballer
2014 Queen of The Pitch Award
African Women’s Footballer of the Year; 2014, 2016, 2017
2014 African WOmen’s Youth Player of the Year
2014 African Women’s Championship Golden Ball
2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Golden Boot
2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Golden Ball
2017 Top Scorer in the Chinese Women’s Super league
Along with her very successful football career, Asisat is a humanitarian and an advocate for the girl child.
She founded the Asisat Oshoala Foundation to help and inspire young girls who love football, but face the same parental issues she did while growing up, to focus on their athletics dreams as well as their studies.
Asisat believes education for the girl child is very important, and every child interested in being a sports person in future must learn to combine both to a T.
