Folarin Falana, also known as
Falz, has made it again to our list for the attention he draws to social issues in Nigeria through his music. Falz has been known to be vocal about
internet fraud in Nigeria. In 2017, Falz addressed his colleagues in the music industry to desist from glorifying fraud in the music. Through his humorous music, Falz has also called out several vices in the society such as church corruption, prostitution, police oppression, abuse of political power, amongst others.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Since she launched her first widely-read book, Purple Hibiscus, in 2003,
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has become a role model for many aspiring writers in Nigeria. Adichie was born in the city of Enugu, Nigeria, and grew up as the fifth of sixth children in the environs of the University of Nigeria in Enugu State. She studied Medicine and Pharmacy at the University of Nigeria before she left the country for the United States to study Communications and Political Science at Drexel University in Philadelphia. In order to be near her sister, Uche, she soon transferred to Eastern Connecticut State University. While studying in the US, she experienced racism; a bias she had never encountered while in Nigeria. As a result, the
novelist wrote about this in her novel Americanah. Adichie has spoken in two major TED talks: one titled “The Danger of a Single Story” in which she talks about the underrepresentation of various cultures in the society and the other titled “We should all be feminists” in which she delivers a speech inequality. Parts of the latter were sampled in Beyonce’s song “Flawless” in December 2013. Adichie has used her fame to promote her idea of feminism on a global scale.
Omotola Jalade Ekeinde
Veteran Nollywood actress,
Omotola Jalede popularly known as ”Omosexy”, is known for her remarkable efforts in contributing to humanitarianism in Nigeria. Back in 2017, she was among the celebrities who clamored during the #EndSARS campaign. She took to Instagram to share a post on “10 things SARS doesn’t want you to know”. Omotola is a GirlsCount ambassador and she uses her position to raise awareness of the rights of girls to Education. She channels her philanthropic efforts through her NGO project called the Omotola Youth Empowerment Programme which gathers hundreds of youths for the Empowerment Walk and Convention. Through these projects and many more, Omotola had lent her voice to various issues plaguing the society.
Innocent Ujah Idibia
In recent times,
Innocent Ujah Idibia, has been vocal about politics and other issues of prominence in the society. In an attempt to promote activism, 2baba used his influence to agitate for a protest against Nigeria’s economic crisis back in 2017. Earlier the year, he also called on the government to abate the killings going on in Benue State where he hails from. He has also
expressed his interest to participate in politics; he did this during an interview in which he urged the Nigerian Government to sign the “Not To Young To Rule” bill.
Lanre Dabiri
Lanre Dabiri, better known by his stage name
Eldee, is a former Nigerian-American rapper and record producer who is currently a IT consultant based in the US.
Eldee has used his voice to shed light on various issues ravaging the society. He currently runs a podcast on Youtube called
Nigerian American Podcast which accommodates opinions on modern slavery, cognitive biases, and finance, amongst others. During the recent purge of internet fraud by EFCC, Eldee was one of the celebrities that spoke out on the issue. In a tweet, he lamented over the role his song, “Big Boy”, played in the decay of society. He also used the the platform to urge fellow musicians to desist from glorifying fraud through their music.
Olubankole Wellington
Bankole Wellington, popularly known as
Banky W, had his breakthrough in the entertainment industry after his debut studio album, Back in the Building, was released back in 2005. He was also the composer of the viral theme song of Etisalat Nigeria titled, “0809ja for life”. The EME boss was sensational last year for his unexpected proposal and marriage to Nollywood actress, Adesua Etomi, and his successful skin cancer surgery on his shoulder. Through social media, Banky W has actively drawn attention to political issues in Nigeria. Of recent, the singer has been urging Nigerians to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) ready for the 2019 elections. He seems to be optimistic about the outcomes of the approaching elections.
Fashion stylist and Chief Executive Officer of 360 Group,
Noble Igwe, is always in the spotlight for his controversial tweets on politics, celebrity drama and most recently on internet fraud. Following the arrest of some internet fraudsters at a club by EFCC, Noble raised controversy after he urged EFCC to fish out more fraudsters from their hideouts in various clubs across Lagos. He was also the reason behind the hashtag #wifenotcook which was a response to a troll who questioned him on eating his breakfast in a restaurant. Noble has not backed down on voicing his opinion despite the harsh criticisms he has faced in the past.
