The Nigerian media mogul, media personality and former human resources management consultant, Mosunmola Abudu, widely known as Mo Abudu, has been described as Africa’s Most Successful Woman by Forbes.

Early life

She was born on September 11, 1964 in London, the first of three girls to Late Mr and Mrs Lawrence Akintunde. She spent seven years in the United Kingdom before her family moved to Nigeria, where she went to lived with her grandparents in their cocoa farm in Ondo State. Mo had her primary education in Nigeria and went on to secondary and tertiary institutions in the United Kingdom. She thereafter bagged a Master’s Degree in HR Management. She first worked as a recruitment consultant in the UK in 1987 and then later joined Exxon Mobil, (formerly Esso Exploration & Production Nigeria Limited) as the Head of Human Resources and Training Unit in 1993, after working with Starform Group from 1990 to 1992. In 2000, she left to establish her own human resources company, Vic Lawrence & Associates Limited (VLA). She also developed and ran an executive development training centre at Protea Hotel, Oakwood Park, Lagos State.

ELTV

Mo Abudu went on to establish EbonyLife TV (ELTV) in 2006, anchoring a talk show, “Moments with Mo”, for which she is referred to as the “Oprah Winfrey of Africa”. She also created “The Debaters”, a reality TV show sponsored by Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB). EbonyLife TV currently airs in over 49 countries across Africa, the UK, and the Caribbean. Just recently, a movie co-produced by ELTV raked in 73 million naira on the weekend of its opening; The Wedding Party 2 – Destination Dubai seemed to be a bigger blockbuster than its prequel that made a total of 36 million naira on its opening weekend. As a philanthropist, Mo Abudu founded The Inspire Africa Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on raising funds to implement society-transforming initiatives. Donations from a charity benefit concert themed “Rocked with a Conscience”, organized by her foundation in January 2009, was given towards the protection of street children. In addition, a charity store, “The Designers Outlet for Charity” was opened in December 2009 in Lagos, and a children’s shelter called “The Harbour” is under development. Mo Abudu has two children.
