As young as 2018 is, there has been a bombardment of hot topics that have been rocking the media. This week was not left out as all the trending topics were making the headlines. We saw a lot of these topics ranging from entertainment to politics, and some hashtags which were even turned into slangs (trust Nigerians).

 Here is a run-down of the top 10 trending topics:

  • Dapchi Girls’ Release:

The Dapchi girls, who were kidnapped a few weeks ago, were released on Wednesday the 21st March 2018. The news brought a trail of mixed reactions among Nigerians on social media. While some people are praising the Government for rescuing the girls, others feel it was a big scam. See some tweets about the ordeal here.
  • BurnaBoy’s Controversial Remark:

“As far as I’m concerned, only Fela Kuti [did] Afrobeat” was the remark BurnaBoy made on Radar Radio. He said this when the interviewer hailed him as “King of the Afrobeats”. He went further to say that what he does is Afro Fusion, and that what musicians do today is called Afro Pop. Watch the interview below.
  • Senator Adeleke #the dancing senator:

Word has spread so much about “The Dancing Senator” that if you have not heard, you’ve missed out on some good dance moves. Senator Adeleke Ademola (Davido’s uncle) earned the title of “dancing senator” last year, when a video of him dancing on social media surfaced after he replaced his brother, Isiaka Adeleke (now deceased) in office. This week, another video of him dancing in an event on Social Media has surfaced again. The thing that gets people talking about his dance videos is the exotic dance moves he proudly displays. Senator Adeleke is so full of energy. He once said that he taught Davido and B-Red how to dance.
  • The Era of Shaking Tables:

“This table you are shaking has…” This slang has been making the rounds on social media. The slang is used as a subtle shade when someone calls out unacceptable behaviour. The slang became more popular recently when Nollywood diva, Rita Dominic, shared a post on her page calling out the Nigerian movie industry for allowing films that are not cinema-worthy to be shown in the cinemas. This post exploded the comments section on her page with different This table you are shaking comments. According to close sources, Rita Dominic who just featured in a movie titled Bound produced by actress Lillian Afegbua, was not impressed that the film made it to the cinema. Rita was nowhere to be found at the premiere and screening of the movie, neither did she promote it on any of her social media platforms. Some people believe the post was a shade thrown at Lillian Afegbua.
  • Bill Gates Visit To Nigeria:

World’s second richest man and philanthropist, Bill Gates, visited Abuja, Nigeria on Wednesday 21st 2018. Bill Gates, in company of Nigeria’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, visited the Emergency Operations Centre for Polio in Abuja. Bill Gates lamented over the state of Nigeria’s economy declaring:
“Nigeria is one of the worst places to give birth…People without roads, ports, and factories can’t flourish. And roads, ports and factories without skilled workers to build and manage them can’t sustain an economy.” — Bill Gates

  • Tony Elumelu’s Birthday:

Nigerian billionaire, Tony Elumelu, celebrated his 55th birthday in style. His birthday was graced with performances by P-Square and other celebrities. President Muhammadu Buhari also reached out to him, congratulating him on his birthday and commending him for his inspiring efforts in Nigeria. Tony Elumelu is the chairman of Heirs Holdings, the United Bank of Africa, Transcorp and founder of the Tony Elumelu foundation.
  • The Wedding cake:

Pictures of the wedding cake that was used at Vice–President Yemi Osibanjo’s daughter’s wedding got people talking on social media. Mrs. Dolapo Osibanjo took it upon herself to bake the beautiful wedding cake and this act has awed a lot of people. She posted the pictures of the wedding cake on her instagram handle and the stages it took to get the cake prepared. See pictures below.
  • Tiwa Savage Immortalized Alive:

Tiwa Savage was reported to have bought a new house, in addition to having a street named after her in Lekki Phase I. According to legendary singer, Tubaba, who got a street named after him just last year (Innocent Idibia Street), Tiwa Savage’s street is just off his street. Nigerians on social media have congratulated her on this great achievement.
  • Dayo Chino’s #wontigetehchallenge:

After dropping a smash-hit titled Slow Down, Dayo Chino has released another hot single featuring Klever Jay titled WonTiGetEh. The song was produced in London. He shared a post on his Instagram page captioned (see below). Since he shared this post, many Nigerians and people from all over the world have been posting their challenge videos on Instagram in order to take home the price. See some videos below.
  • Dino Melaye’s Message to Governor Yahaya Bello:

In the video by lawmaker Dino Melaye, he denied the allegations made against him, stating that he did not sponsor thugs with arms to destabilize Kogi ahead of 2019 elections. Dino Melaye also ridiculed Governor Yahaya Bello. The video got the attention of Nigerians on social media, with some people have encouraging the Kogi senator to start producing his own “singles” in the studio. Watch the hilarious video below.
