About 200 professional golfers across the nation have signed up for this year’s edition of the Governor’s Cup in Jos, Plateau State. This is an impressive turnaround for the tournament which had only about 96 professional golfers in attendance at last year’s event. Speaking at the opening of the competition on Tuesday, the captain of the Lamingo Golf Club, Tang Dapoet, said this year more participants from within and outside Nigeria have registered and will complete for the ultimate prize.
In the last year’s edition, we had 96 professional golfers that participated, but in this year’s tournament, over 200 from all over the country and beyond are participating,” — Tang Dapoet
Tang went on to laud the efforts of Governor Simon Lalong in promoting the sport in the state. On his part, Gov. Lalong, who declared the tournament open, divulged his plans of making Plateau the home of golf in the country, stating that the serene weather condition of the state has placed it in a great position.
When we started this competition in 2016, people forget there is crisis in the state and this goes to show that Plateau is peaceful. Golf is not a game for the elite; anybody can participate because it helps you keep fit and healthy.” — Gov. Lalong
