Jumia recently announced the launch of it’s Zero Data App in partnership with MTN, Nigeria’s formost telecommunication service provider. This initiative is targeted mainly at reducing data costs, which has been identified as the greatest barrier to extending mobile internet access in Nigeria. This new partnership allows MTN customers full access to online shopping through the Jumia Zero Data App for free. MTN customers have a no-charge access for every time they use the app. They also have free access to Jovago, an online hotel booking platform and Kaymu, a shopping community, all this through the app. Speaking on the new developments, the CEO Jumia Africa, Mr. Nicolas Martin stated that “In order to provide the best customer experience, it is time for Jumia to make its services available for more people, anywhere at any given time.” He further stated that “we are proud of this partnership with MTN that will undoubtedly lead to an increasing value for our customers. We believe that a better internet access and even more mobile will foster economic development for both small businesses and Nigeria as a whole.” The app is available for Android, Blackberry and iOS smartphone users and can be downloaded by simply sending “JUMAPP” to “131” as a text message from an MTN line. Jumia hopes to use this initiative to democratize access to the internet, directly impacting the over 140 million smartphone users in Nigeria and the 70% users already using the Jumia app.
