Nokia
announced its new flagship windows phone – Nokia lumia 920 – yesterday. The phone is sleek and with the super-rated Windows 8 OS. There have been reviews of the software before this lunch, and there was developer edition, to get them familiar with it, so as to come up with applications. In Nigeria, Nokia has been involved in a number of projects with developers, to burnish its brand with more local contents.
In a related move, Nokia and Microsoft have awarded 16 Nokia lumia phones to local developers. This includes 6 students and 10 independent developers. This is to encourage them build locally relevant applications for the Nigerian environment. Nokia pledged to do this earlier this year at the Microsoft Software Developers Camp, and also promised to present its phones to top finalists of the Microsoft Imagine Cup finals.
Speaking at the presentation, Head, Developer Experience, Nokia West Africa, Teemu Kiijarvi said “Nokia and Microsoft as partners are working very closely, on a global and local level, to create opportunities for entrepreneurs and students to bring their ideas and products into global awareness. Both Imagine Cup and the developer training event are great examples of our partnership.”
Speaking for Microsoft, it’s Marketing Lead for Nigeria, Awawu Olumide-Sojinrin, said, “We have a wealth of talented developers in Nigeria and we are happy to see them being recognized. We hope that the Nokia Lumia phones they receive today will inspire them to start thinking about new ideas for the Imagine Cup 2013 competition in Russia next year. We hope that this year’s competition will be the best year yet for Nigeria, and we hope to see more participants than ever before.”
Nokia has been tipped to grow in smart phone sales, after the iPhone, Samsung, Android and Blackberry phones got more of the market share globally. Nokia is relying much on its adoption of the Windows software to take its large bite in the market world and also in Nigeria.
